Facebook = Paysite || OMFG!

As a frequent visitor unto the realms of facebook, I often stumble something that stirs feelings of amusement within me.  None, however, as much as what I am about to write now…  Although, in the defense of the subject at whom this rant is aimed, facebook groups did manage to successfully bring back the wispa bar; for which I am grateful (Oh, how I missed those fellows!)

Nonetheless, I found a group built around nothing else aside from a rumor that facebook would become a PAYSITE…  It does have 1.4 million members though – the word “member” here is something for another time!  I cannot dispute the popularity of facebook, nor the success it has had since it’s launch 5 years ago, but it will still remain to me a fashion accessory.  It’s not going to be something someone will commit their whole social networking lives to… times change, and as a result, so do the needs, wants and desires of the people whom social networking sites target.  I guess, though, it’s not so much the individual’s requirement, but more-so which social site is used by more of one’s friends.  For me, I always used to use myspace, it was cool, the place to be: you could have customised profiles, a profile song, a blog, videos and a whole different array of options which could be used the way I needed them to.  One by one, though, my friends frequented myspace less and less, opting for the cooler, more fashionable facebook.  Believe, I did try to be loyal to myspace for as long as possible, but even I had to give into the needs of the majority… People were refusing to use several networking sites just because one was easier.  Now, it’s a headlock battle between loads of different versions of what, are essentially, the same thing.  Bebo vs myspace vs facebook vs twitter… It is completely nonsensical why we need so many.  Nevertheless, this is now detracting from my previous rant… Regardless of however many people join a “group,” it really doesn’t demonstrate people power.  I am pretty sure facebook doesn’t care if you threaten to leave facebook, because out of the several million members, I am pretty sure there are some actually willing to pay for it – I wouldn’t, though!  The thing is, facebook is a business, and as a business it needs to stay afloat.  To be honest, if facebook just disappeared – as with every other networking site (perhaps excluding myspace for the music/film aspects) – it probably wouldn’t take me long to get used to it, meh, it’s just words and pictures and meaningless interjections – talking in real life is where it is at!  I mean, threatening to leave facebook if it becomes a pay site is just… well, I can’t think of an analogy to compare it to, but when I do, you’ll be sure to find out!

Here is the link to the group, see what I mean:

I for one would not pay for facebook, but solely for the fact I don’t need it to survive!

Until Next Time,
Richard
